After A Slow Start, Martinez Buries Macklin In The 11th!
By Alexander Damien
Madison Square Garden, New York- Argentina’s Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s), started slow, but eventually turned up the heat on Ireland’s Matthew Macklin (28-4, 19 KO’s), and got a tko in the 11th after Macklin’s corner stopped the bout.
The first couple of rounds were slow for Martinez, as he picked and popped Macklin, but never fully engaging into a war. Never throwing a long combination, but just landing clean left’s. Macklin would win a couple of rounds as he would be a bit busier than Sergio, but never doing a big amount of damage.
Everything changed in the 7th as Macklin dropped Martinez on what seemed to be tangled legs, but was called a knockdown by the referee. The knockdown caused Martinez to go into a panic mode and become more offensive in the round.
In the next couple of rounds, Martinez turned up the heat on Macklin and began to land hard shots. Pounding and bruising Macklin’s face with clean hooks. Finally, in the 11th, Martinez dropped Macklin twice, leaving the Irish fighter stumbling back to his corner as the round ended. Matthew wasn’t allowed to come out to the 12th as his corner stepped in and called the fight due to the punishment Macklin was suffering.
With the win, now start to come the big name fights that Martinez wants. Hopefully a future bout against p4p kingpin Floyd Mayweather is in his future, or a catchweight bout with Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. Either way, Martinez has proved that anyone standing in his way is not safe for 12 rounds, as the Argentine middleweight possesses monster power throughout 12 rounds.
