Tokyo, Japan
- Australia’s Vic Darchinyan (37-5-1 with 27Ko’s)came up short for a second time in a row by losing a lop sided unanimous decision over Japan’s own Shinsuke Yamanaka (16-0-2, 11Ko’s). Darchinyan was trying to capture his third world championship.

Darchinyan came out strong in the early rounds using his pressure on the WBC bantamweight champion, Yamanaka. Shinsuke didn’t seem to have an answer for Vic’s style early in the fight. In the 5th, Yamanka scored a left on Vic that opened up a nasty gash over his right eye. Vic never seemed to be able to fight comfortably with the gash over his eye, and started to lose rounds.

In the 11th rd, Yamanaka hurt and staggered Darchinyan, but was unable to finish him.

The bout went to the scorecards which read as 117-111, 116-112, 116-112 all in favor of Yamanaka.
